Benedict XIII

Benedict XIII
(d. 1423)
   Antipope.
Benedict XIII was born Pedro de Luna. An expert in Canon Law, he was made a Cardinal in 1375. After the death of Antipope Clement VII in 1394, he was elected in his place on the understanding that he would resign in order to put an end to the papal schism which had begun in 1387 with Clement’s election over Urban vi. However, once elected, he maintained his position with utmost determination. He was deposed at the Council of Pisa in 1409 and again at the Council of Constance in 1417. Even after his allies had deserted him, and until the day of his death, he insisted that he was the one true Pope. This fiasco did much to discredit the institution of the Papacy in the century before the Protestant Reformation.
